SPM-HEP-2981 is the electric throttle motor (governor actuator) that moves the engine fuel lever to the speed set on the cab dial. It is used on Caterpillar D2 and D3 series excavators. It replaces Caterpillar 509-9705, Caterpillar 483-7810 and Caterpillar 386-3439. This aftermarket part has the same mounting and electrical connector as the original, so it plugs in and bolts on where the old one came off.

Engine speed does not follow the dial
When turning the engine speed dial does nothing, or the engine stays at idle or at full speed, the throttle motor or its cable is the usual cause once the dial and controller check out.

Worn gears or a failing position feedback inside the motor make the engine speed hunt up and down. A new motor brings back a steady speed at every dial setting.

A throttle motor fault on the monitor points to the motor, its plug or the wiring. Check the connector and loom for damage before replacing the motor.
Fitting tips
Note where the cable sits at idle and at full speed before removing the old motor, set the new cable to the same stroke, and run the machine maker's idle or throttle calibration if the machine has one.
