Caterpillar 216-3446 is the crankshaft / camshaft position (speed) sensor with mounting bracket and integral connector. It is used on Caterpillar 3054E, 3056E, C4.4 and C6.6 engines. This aftermarket version has the same mounting and electrical connector as the original, so it plugs in and bolts on where the old one came off.

Engine speed missing on the monitor
A failed speed sensor leaves the monitor without an engine speed signal. The controller may then run the pump in a fallback mode and the machine feels slow.

Where the engine controller uses the signal, a faulty sensor can stop the engine starting or make it cut out.
Damaged lead
The lead runs close to the engine and gets chafed or burned. A damaged cable is a common reason to replace the sensor.
Fitting tips
Set the air gap as the machine manual says (usually screw in until it touches the gear teeth, then back off and lock the nut) and route the lead away from heat.
