Caterpillar 268-0761 Aftermarket Throttle Dial Switch

Caterpillar 268-0761 is the throttle (engine speed) dial: knob on a cylindrical metal switch body with flying lead and connector. It is used on Caterpillar mini excavators (C2.4, C2.6 and C3.3B engines). This aftermarket version has the same mounting and electrical connector as the original, so it plugs in and bolts on where the old one came off.

Engine speed will not change
When the throttle dial fails, turning it no longer changes engine speed, or the engine sits at idle or full speed. Check the plug and wiring, then measure the dial's signal with a meter.

Jumpy or hunting engine speed
A worn track inside the dial gives a jumpy signal, so the engine speed surges or drops as the dial is turned or the cab vibrates.

Broken knob or loose shaft
A cracked knob, a slipping shaft or a dial that turns past its stops is a reason to replace the whole switch.

Fitting tips
Disconnect the battery, unplug the old dial, fit the new one in the same position in the console and check the full speed range before going back to work. Some machines need the throttle range reset as the machine manual describes.
