Frequently asked questions

Will it fit my Caterpillar C9 diesel engine?

Yes, it was made for the Caterpillar C9 diesel engine, and 7 more listed under compatible equipment. Check the old fuel injector is marked 557-7633 or one of the cross references, because makers change parts between serial ranges.

How often should I replace the fuel injector on my Caterpillar C9 diesel engine?

On the Caterpillar C9 diesel engine, often 5,000 to 10,000 hours, but much less on poor or wet fuel. Injectors are usually changed when they fail a test, not by hours.

What are the signs the fuel injector needs replacing?

Black or white smoke, a misfire or knock on one cylinder, hard starting, higher fuel use, or a high return leak or balance rate on test.

Do I need new sealing washers?

Always. Fit a new copper washer and O-rings under every injector you remove. A reused washer leaks combustion gas and carbon packs the bore.

How do I find the bad one?

Run a return leak test or read the injector balance rates with a diagnostic tool. On older mechanical engines, cracking each pipe in turn at idle shows which cylinder changes least.

Is this a genuine Caterpillar 557-7633?

No. It is an aftermarket fuel injector made to replace the Caterpillar 557-7633. It is not made by the original manufacturer; the number only shows what it replaces.
