High discharge temperature trips
A thermostat that no longer opens keeps the oil in the bypass and away from the cooler, so the compressor runs hot and trips on element outlet temperature. Check the cooler, fan and oil level first, then the valve.
Water in the oil
A valve that opens too early keeps the oil too cool, so moisture condenses in the separator tank and emulsifies the oil. A milky oil sample on a lightly loaded machine points to the thermostat.
Scheduled service
The element and spring are wear parts. Replace them at the major service interval in the compressor's instruction book, or with every oil change on machines that run hot or in humid sites.
Fitting tips
Stop the compressor, vent it and let it cool before opening the valve housing. Fit new O rings, check the element sits square in its seat, and check the oil temperature and for leaks after start up.
