The focusing set brings that beam to the cutting spot. A longer focal length gives a larger spot and more depth of focus, which suits thicker plate.

Replacing a damaged lens
Pitting or burn marks on a lens show as slow piercing, a wide kerf and lost cutting power. Replace both lenses of the set together.
Keeping the holder
If the lens holder is undamaged, fitting a new pair is cheaper than a complete assembly.
Changing focal length
A longer focusing lens gives a larger spot and more depth of focus for thick plate; a shorter one a smaller spot for thin sheet.
