Applications & use cases
Engine running cold
A thermostat stuck open lets coolant bypass the warm-up stage: the temperature gauge stays low, the heater blows cool and fuel use goes up. Fit a new thermostat before the engine wears from running cold.
Engine overheating
A thermostat stuck closed stops coolant reaching the radiator and the engine overheats within minutes under load. Check the coolant level, fan belt and radiator first, then the thermostat.
Test before fitting
Heat the thermostat in water with a thermometer: it should start to open close to its rated temperature and open fully a little above it. Fit it the right way round, with the sensing end towards the engine.
Fitting tips
Drain the coolant below the housing, clean both faces, fit a new seal or gasket, and refill and bleed the cooling system to the machine's specification before running it up to temperature.
