Frequently asked questions
Will it fit my Cummins 6C8.3?
Yes, it was made for the Cummins 6C8.3, and 1 more listed under compatible equipment. Check the old starter motor is marked 5304291 or one of the cross references, because makers change parts between serial ranges.
How often should I replace the starter motor on my Cummins 6C8.3?
On the Cummins 6C8.3, typically 5,000 to 10,000 hours, depending on how often the machine is started and how well the batteries are kept.
What are the signs the starter motor needs replacing?
Clicking with a good battery, slow cranking, grinding as it engages, or the starter staying engaged after the engine fires.
What should I check before fitting it?
Battery voltage under load, the earth strap and the main cable. A weak supply makes a good starter motor look faulty and will burn out the new one.
Should I check the ring gear?
Yes. Look at the flywheel teeth through the starter opening. Chewed teeth will damage the new pinion.
Is this a genuine Cummins 5304291?
No. It is an aftermarket starter motor made to replace the Cummins 5304291. It is not made by the original manufacturer; the number only shows what it replaces.
