Frequently asked questions
Will it fit my Caterpillar C7?
Yes, it was made for the Caterpillar C7, and 2 more listed under compatible equipment. Check the old fuel injector is marked 20R-5079 or one of the cross references, because makers change parts between serial ranges.
How often should I replace the fuel injector on my Caterpillar C7?
On the Caterpillar C7, often 5,000 to 10,000 hours, but much less on poor or wet fuel. Injectors are usually changed when they fail a test, not by hours.
What are the signs the fuel injector needs replacing?
Black or white smoke, a misfire or knock on one cylinder, hard starting, higher fuel use, or a high return leak or balance rate on test.
What should I do before fitting it?
Clean the bore and seat of carbon, and keep the nozzle capped until it goes in. Torque the clamp to the engine manual, not by feel.
Should I replace all of them at once?
Not always. If the others pass a return leak or balance test, one can be changed. Where they are all high hours, a full set keeps the cylinders even.
Is this a genuine Caterpillar 20R-5079?
No. It is an aftermarket fuel injector made to replace the Caterpillar 20R-5079. It is not made by the original manufacturer; the number only shows what it replaces.
