A strap wrench for spin-on filters that will not come off by hand: engine oil filters, fuel filters, hydraulic spin-ons and the canister filters on compressors. The woven strap wraps round the can and the toothed head bites into it as you pull the 12 in (300 mm) handle, so the grip tightens the harder you turn.
The strap does not crush or puncture the filter can the way a screwdriver through the side does, and it works in the tight spaces where a cup or claw wrench cannot get on. It also undoes round parts such as filter bowls, pipe fittings and water filter housings.

Spin-on filters
Wrap the strap round the filter can as close to the base as you can reach, where the can is strongest.
Seized oil filters
A filter fitted dry or overtightened at the last service can be impossible to turn by hand. Loop the strap, take up the slack and pull the handle anticlockwise; the teeth lock the strap and the filter breaks free.
Fuel and hydraulic spin-ons
The same tool handles the fuel filter and the hydraulic spin-on on the same machine, so one wrench in the service kit covers the full filter change.
Tight engine bays
The flat strap slides into gaps where a cup wrench or a three-leg wrench will not fit, and the handle can be set at any angle round the filter.
Fitting the new filter
Spin-on filters are tightened by hand: three quarters of a turn after the gasket touches. Use the wrench to remove the old filter, not to tighten the new one.
