Loss of power and black smoke
A worn turbo stops building boost: the machine feels flat under load and smokes. Check the air filter and intake hoses first, then the turbo.
Oil leaks and blue smoke
Worn shaft seals let oil into the intake or exhaust. Replace the turbo before oil starvation damages the engine.
Noise and shaft play
A whistle or grinding from the turbo, or play in the shaft, means the bearings are going. Change the turbo before the wheels touch the housing.
Fitting tips
Fit new gaskets, prime the turbo with clean oil, change the oil and filter, and check the oil feed and drain lines before starting.
