Thermal Dynamics 9-8241 is the gouging shield for the SL60 and SL100 1Torch plasma torches, used on Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster and Victor air plasma cutters (gouging, all currents). This is an aftermarket part made to the same number and fit.
The gouging shield screws onto the front of the shield cup in place of the cutting shield cap. Its wide open front lets the arc reach the work at a low angle for gouging out welds and defects, while it keeps molten metal blown back from the gouge off the tip.
Check the number on your old part or in the torch manual before ordering: it should read 9-8241. Sold in packs of 5 or 10.

Applications & use cases
Drag cutting
With a drag shield cap you can rest the torch on the plate and follow a line or template by hand. Replace the cap when its face is worn, burned or out of round.
Holding the stack together
The shield cup holds the start cartridge, tip and electrode in the torch head. Replace it when it is cracked or chipped or the thread is worn; a loose cup stops the torch firing, because the torch senses when the cup is not seated.

Frequently asked questions
Will it fit my Thermal Dynamics SL60?
Yes, it was made for the Thermal Dynamics SL60, and 1 more listed under compatible equipment. Check the old plasma shield is marked 9-8241 or one of the cross references, because makers change parts between serial ranges.
How often should I replace the plasma shield on my Thermal Dynamics SL60?
On the Thermal Dynamics SL60, laser and plasma nozzles wear in days to weeks, depending on hours of arc or beam time, material and gas. Change it on condition, not by date.
What are the signs the plasma shield needs replacing?
An oval or nicked orifice, spatter stuck on the tip, more dross, a wider cut or bevel on one side, and height sensing errors.
How do I know it is worn?
Look at the orifice: if it is oval, nicked or has spatter stuck to it, the cut quality falls. Change it before it damages the parts behind it.
What should I do after changing it?
Centre the nozzle on the beam and recalibrate the height sensor. A new nozzle off centre cuts on one side only.
Is this a genuine Thermal Dynamics 9-8241?
No. It is an aftermarket plasma shield made to replace the Thermal Dynamics 9-8241. It is not made by the original manufacturer; the number only shows what it replaces.
