Caterpillar 299-9118 is the joystick pilot control valve: an aluminium body with six capped ports underneath, a stamped steel mounting plate and the plunger and lever pivot on top. It is used on Caterpillar 267B, 277B and 287B loaders. This aftermarket version is made to the same mounting and connections as the original, so it fits where the old one came off.
The same part is also sold as Caterpillar 233-5996.
Sold as one unit. Check the number on your old part, or in the parts manual for your machine, before ordering.

Applications & use cases
Controls weak or dead
The pilot (self reducing) valve feeds the low pressure oil the joysticks and pedals use. When it fails every function becomes sluggish or stops responding together.
Low pilot pressure reading
A gauge on the pilot circuit reading well under the service figure, with a healthy pump, points to the reducing valve.
Travel or attachment pedal problems
A worn foot pilot valve gives jerky or one sided travel and attachment control.
Matching the old unit
Match the part number on the old valve and check the port layout before fitting.

Frequently asked questions
Will it fit my Caterpillar 267B?
Yes, it was made for the Caterpillar 267B, and 2 more listed under compatible equipment. Check the old pilot valve is marked 299-9118 or one of the cross references, because makers change parts between serial ranges.
How often should I replace the pilot valve on my Caterpillar 267B?
On the Caterpillar 267B, there is no fixed interval. It is changed when it fails, and many fail from water in the plug or chafed wiring rather than wear.
What are the signs the pilot valve needs replacing?
A fault code for this circuit, readings that jump or stay fixed, or a part that does not respond with power at the plug.
How do I test a solenoid coil?
Measure the coil resistance with a multimeter and check for supply voltage at the plug with the circuit on. An open coil reads infinite.
How do I test the old part first?
Read the fault codes, then check the plug and wiring for corrosion or a broken wire. A wiring fault reads the same as a failed pilot valve.
Is this a genuine Caterpillar 299-9118?
No. It is an aftermarket pilot valve made to replace the Caterpillar 299-9118. It is not made by the original manufacturer; the number only shows what it replaces.
